Meet our Chief of Global Engagement: Ralph Cantave. Ralph is a 23 year old St. Maartener with Haitian heritage studying Broadcast Journalism. We're excited to chat with Ralph and learn more about him.
Ralph decided to study Broadcast journalism because he loves writing, interpreting history and telling the truth (as well as discovering it.) He hopes to engage the world with his writing and ideas. His short term goal is to get my Masters degree and a long term goal is to travel across the Middle East.
What is it like leaving home (the Caribbean) to study abroad?
"It was tough but worthy. It showed me that there's so much potential for us as a region to grow. Also, we consume so much of American media that my encounter with Americans and American culture was not much of a shock. Being away from home is also an opportunity to represent my island and the Caribbean."
Ralph has had many accomplishments throughout his career. He was awarded the President of Parliament award in 2015 for his work in youth affairs. He was also a writer for Teen Times and a committee member of the St. Martin Book Fair as well as a UNESCO youth representative.
Currently he is the Co-Owner of a venture he started with his wife called "The Johnny Caker." He says "My journey has been one that simply taught me the importance of focus, patience and diligence."
Why did you join this non-profit?
"Truly, I joined in order to help guide and give back to those who aren't readily positioned to receiving the opportunities and benefits I obtained. I want to see our people thrive and make use of the resources of this world to do so; even if it means going somewhere else. I envision a future of radical transformation and growth for our nations."
Ralph loves the Caribbean for the communal support one receives as a young person growing in this society. He says, "The best part of being West-Indian is our accents. It's pure gold!" For fun, he loves to read and play dominos.
Thank you Ralph for the interview and letting our readers know a little bit more about you! We are excited to have Ralph on our non-profit's board!
